The Making of a Cover Design

The Making of a Cover Design

Metamorphosis of Chasing the Butterfly

A story is conceived in the mind when dreams, musings, and wandering thoughts mingle. Then, it is developed in the words, lines, and pages of the manuscript--constantly changed and morphed into the intended image, sight, smell, and sound. Finally, the story is born--unveiling itself in the published and bound book--unfolding its pages for the beholder's eye.

But, ah! The design of the cover is essential. It is the pulsating wings that give the book flight. It is the element that allures and entices the reader to snatch it from the bookstore shelf from among the thousands of other beautiful species. It the invitation for the reader to hide away in a private spot, steal the time from a busy day, and run headlong and with abandon into another world found only between the pages of a story.

My dear friend and professional artist extraordinaire, Kelly Berger, was able to step into my mind and create a painting that is being considered as a main element of the cover design for the novel. I have much more to share about Kelly in upcoming posts. Her artwork and gallery coupled with our full-circle friendship is a story in itself. For now, I'd love to read your thoughts about this painting.
